Chapter 16

Lainey

Going home with Ben is crazy, stupid, and so reckless. Last week, I nearly messed up our friendship by having sex with him. In fact, I’m not entirely convinced I didn’t. Yet here I am, in the back of a taxi with Ben, and even though he said we’ll still be friends, I feel like I’m about to mess up all over again. Sleeping with him tonight won’t diminish my attraction to him. Nor will it dilute the jealousy that I feel when I see him flirting with another woman.

I’ve lost my mind, clearly. I just... I couldn’t send him back inside The Golden Roo, into the arms of another woman. Not when his kisses are so hungry, so demanding and hot that I feel more desired and wanted than I ever have in my life.

Of course it’s all just a lie. He might kiss me as though I’m the only one he wants, but that’s because he wants me. Tonight. Tomorrow will be a different story completely, but we have all night. I don’t expect Ben to love me the way I expected Lucas to. Even if having sex with my friend confuses my feelings for him, I’m walking into tonight with my eyes wide open. No deluding myself ever again. This is never going to be anything more than sex for him.

I tear my mouth away from his as the taxi stops outside of a place I assume is his, ready to put my hand into my purse and pay the driver. Ben, however, is quicker than I am. He takes a couple of twenties from his wallet and passes them to the driver. “Keep the change.”

Then he opens his door, steps out and takes me with him. He kisses me thoroughly and pulls me against him as the taxi drives off. His erection presses against my belly, leaving me aching and desperate for him. I’m in danger of melting into a puddle of desire on the footpath, my temperature soaring from hot to feverish. His kisses are the most powerful and heady aphrodisiac I’ve ever tasted.

Once my knees are trembling so badly that I can barely stand without his help, he turns me around so my back is against his front and he walks me in the direction of his unit. It’s dark, and I’m grateful it’s one of the first units on the block. Once we’re at his front door, he lets me go and grabs a key from underneath a rock.

“I have nothing worth stealing,” he informs me. “And this isn’t the Hilton.”

There’s almost a defensive quality to his voice, and I wonder if he’s worried I’m going to judge him and his place. Doesn’t he know I couldn’t care less what he has or doesn’t have? Ben might not have Lucas’s wealth, easy-going nature, or charm, but he’s a good guy. He’s been good to me. And he was very good to Amber. I know Lucas never thought Ben was good enough for
